Fuller Lips and Failed Promises: When Cosmetic Surgery meets the Courtroom

Cosmetic treatments are booming in Cyprus, but when expectations collide with reality, many patients find themselves without adequate legal protection. Although general medical negligence principles apply to procedures like fillers and BBLs, cosmetic surgery presents unique challenges—especially where informed consent, acceptable risk, and practitioner standards are concerned. Many complications arise from cheaper or unlicensed treatments, leaving patients with limited recourse when faced with scarring or disfigurement. While Cypriot tort law and EU regulations offer avenues for claims, courts still struggle to assess aesthetic harm, and the growing number of unregulated clinics, including in the island’s occupied areas, further complicates patient safety and legal accountability.
