How “Green” is your Product? New Environmental Rules in Cyprus

New consumer protection rules expected to apply in Cyprus by September 2026 will introduce stricter requirements for environmental claims used in product marketing, branding and labelling.

The legislation, aligned with the EU Directive on empowering consumers for the green transition, aims to combat greenwashing by prohibiting unclear, unreliable or misleading environmental claims and improving transparency for consumers.

Businesses, particularly brand owners and trademark applicants, should review their marketing materials, product packaging and trademark portfolios to ensure environmental claims are properly substantiated, as non-compliance may lead to regulatory scrutiny, reputational risks or even trademark registration challenges.
