International family law provides an essential framework of protection for families facing cross-border disputes, from divorce, maintenance and parental responsibility to property matters and international child abduction. In Cyprus, these issues are shaped by national legislation, EU regulations and international conventions, which together determine questions of jurisdiction, recognition and enforcement of foreign court orders, and the procedures available where a child has been wrongfully removed or retained abroad. Although such cases are often emotionally demanding and legally complex, the applicable framework offers structure, clarity and practical routes to resolution. Above all, the guiding principle remains constant: the best interests and welfare of the child.
